Already this month, within the exclusion zone surrounding the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the construction of a new energy facility may begin. The Ukrainian engineering company Rodina Energy Group Ltd. and the German Enerparc AG are implementing a joint project with a budget of $ 1.2 million. This is a solar farm that can appear just 100 meters from the Chernobyl sarcophagus.
The modern Ukrainian authorities are very upset that the Chernobyl zone looks like a black useless hole in the country. It could and should make a profit – after the massive evacuation of people in 1986 there is a lot of empty space where you can implement bold projects. And it does not matter that there are fewer sunny days at these latitudes than on the coast of the Sea of Azov, in the same state, the solar power station – to be!
The statement can not be considered controversial even if only because in 2016 the Ukrainian government concluded a contract with the above-mentioned companies for the sale of electricity generated at the solar power plant. The price until 2030 will be 15 euro cents per 1 kWh, which is 40% higher than the cost of a similar resource in Europe. Consider this as a long-term investment – at the first stage a 1 MW station will appear, but then it will be expanded to 99 MW.
The development of clean energy sources is an initiative not only commendable, but also vital. For Ukraine – especially, in the light of the constant problems with the supply of coal to the CHP from the eastern regions of the country and the steadily decrepit nuclear power plants of Soviet construction. And all would be well, if you do not remember the risk of corruption component of any project in this region.
